How do I know if I need therapy?
You don't need a diagnosis or a crisis to start. Common signs include: feeling stuck, repeating the same patterns, struggling with relationships, experiencing anxiety or low mood, processing big life changes, or simply wanting to understand yourself better.
Here's the thing: if you're asking this question, you're probably already noticing something worth exploring. Therapy isn't just for "broken" people - it's for anyone wanting to live more intentionally.
I've never done therapy before. What should I expect in the first session?
First sessions are mostly about getting to know each other. Your therapist will ask about what brought you in, what you're hoping for, and a bit about your background. You'll get a sense of their style, and they'll get a sense of yours.
Expect questions like: "What made you reach out now?" "What does a good day look like for you?" "How do you usually handle stress?"
You won't fix everything in one session. Think of it as a first date, but with better outcomes and no awkward small talk about the weather.
Do I have to talk about my childhood?
Only if it's relevant to what you're dealing with now. Some people find it helpful to explore family patterns; others don't. You're not required to excavate your entire past unless it serves your present.
If your therapist suggests exploring something from your history, they'll explain why it matters. You can always say "not ready for that yet."
How do I choose the right therapist?
Look at their bios. Notice whose approach resonates. Do they mention things that matter to you - trauma-informed care, queer-affirming practice, cultural competence?
Trust your gut. If someone's profile makes you feel seen, that's worth exploring. If the first session feels off, it's okay to try someone else. Fit matters more than credentials.
What if I'm too nervous to talk in the first session?
Tell your therapist that. Seriously. "I'm really nervous" is a perfectly valid thing to say, and it actually gives them helpful information about how to work with you.
Some people talk a lot when they're nervous. Others go quiet. Both are fine. Your therapist has seen it all and won't judge you for needing time to warm up.
Can I bring notes or write things down during sessions?
Absolutely. Some people keep therapy journals. Others bring bullet-pointed lists of things they want to remember to mention. Do what helps you show up fully.
How long does therapy take?
Impossible to say upfront - everyone's different. Some people see shifts in weeks; others work for months or years. Therapy isn't like fixing a broken bone where there's a predictable timeline.
What we can say: you'll start noticing changes before you feel "done." Progress shows up in small ways first - sleeping better, setting one boundary, catching yourself in an old pattern before you repeat it.
